Ian Hamilton Finlay

Ian Hamilton Finlay (Nassau, 1925 - Dunsyre, 2006) preferred the title of "gardener" to that of artist or poet. For most of his life, he lived and worked in his property of Little Sparta in Dunsyre, Lanark (Scotland).

Among his one-man shows we recall here the ones held at the Victoria Miro Gallery, London (1998, 2003, 2007); Oriel Mostyn Llandudno (1996); Joan Miró Foundation, Barcelona (1999); McMaster Museum of art, Hamilton ON - Canada (2000); David Nolan Gallery, New York (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005); Galerie Stampa, Basilea (2006); Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh (2007); Kunthalle, Bremen (2008) ; In Londonthe Tate Gallery devoted an important retrospective to his work in 2002, and then repeated an exhibition and a series of events to honor his career in November 2005.

Permanent public artworks can be seen at the parco della Padula, Carrara; the Stuart Collection, La Jolla, California; Laumeier Sculture Park, St. Louis, Missouri; Rijksmuseum Kroller-Muller, Otterlo.
