Alan Sonfist was born in New York in 1946 and lives and works in his native city.

In 2005 his work was seen in a one-man show at the Queens Museum of Art and in the group show "Forest: Politics, Poetics and Practice" at the Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, Raleigh. The same year he proposed an ambitious environmental project for Collect Pond a New York. Between 2014-2015 the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest devoted a retrospective show to his work.
