Michelangelo Pistoletto was born in Biella in 1933 and lives and works in Turin.
His most recent exhibitions include the career surveys held at the Museu d'Art Contemporanei, Barcellona (2000) and the Musée d'art contemporain, Lyons (2002); as well as shows in Pieve di Cadore (2003); Galleria Salvatore Ala, Milan (2004); Oredaria Arti Contemporanei, Rome (2005); Radio Arte Mobile RAM, Rome (2005); Fondazione Southeritage, Matera (2005); Galleria Corraini, Mantua (2005); CAMeC, La Spezia (2007-8); Galleria Continua, Beijing (2008); Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia (2010-2011); Serpentine Gallery, London (2011). 
In 2002 he was awarded the Leone d'Oro career prize at the Venice Biennale while, in 2005,  the same prestigious institution devoted the entire island of San Servolo to an exhibition, workshops and performances promoted by the artist and the Fondazione Pistoletto. In 2004 The University of Turin granted him an honorary degree, and three years later he received the Art Prize from the Wolf Foundation in Jerusalem.
