Born in Dusseldorf in 1938, Ulrich Ruckriem lives and works in London.
In 1964 he held his first one-man show at the Domgalerie in Cologne and in 1969 he showed with Konrad Fischer's gallery in Dusseldorf. In the 1970s he held a number of shows in such museums as the Haus Lange, Krefeld; Kunsthalle, Tübingen; Städtische Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach; Frankfurter Kunstverein; Museum of Modern Art, Oxford; Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Kunstmuseum, Bonn. The 1980s activity is characterized by large exhibitions in important public venues such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Westfalisches Landesmuseum, Münster; Kröller-Müller Museum,Otterlo; Palacio de Cristal at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. In 2004 the Neue National Galerie in Berlin and the Stiftung Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg gave him a large solo exhibition while in 2007 he held two more career reviews at the Ludwig Museum in Cologna and at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover. In 2009 the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin devoted a large retrospective to Ruckriem
