The Cube without a Cube
Sol Lewitt
1988 - white cement

On the eastern side of the park, a large circular space bordered by plane and chestnut trees forms a ring around a white cube (5x5x5 m, made from module cement blocks measuring 20x50 cm). Following the path, one receives, at first glance, the impression of a large square wall. Continuing along the gently steepening path, one next sees the form of a cube. When finally the whole work can be seen, it is revealed that one eighth of the figure, in the shape of a cube, has been subtracted. Seen from the highest point of the path, the cube is framed by the landscape; in the distance, other geometric forms appear, such as the lines of cypress trees and the rectangular farmhouses situated on a nearby hillside.
