Richard Serra, born in San Francisco in 1939, lives and works between Nova Scotia and New York where he shows regularly with the Castelli and Gagosian Galleries.
Among the many awards and one-man shows in his career, we recall here only some of the most recent: drawing retrospective at the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (1990); awarded the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Sculpture Prize (1991); retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (1992); elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1993); received the Imperial Award in Japan (1994); he received an honorary degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland (1994).

His best known public works are titled: Tilted Arc (dismantled from Federal Plaza, New York City 1981); The Matter of Time, Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (2005). His works can be seen in Open Air collections just like those at Nassau County Museum of Fine Arts, Roslyn Harbor, NY; Des Moines Art Center, Iowa; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Laumeier Sculture Park, St. Louis, Missouri, Sea Level, Zeewolde, Netherlands (2004) as well as the Dia Art Foundation, Beacon, NY and Sea Level, Zeewolde, Olanda (2004)
